About Dr. E
Passion for pelvic, genital, and sexual pain
Hi, I’m Dr. Robert Echenberg. My journey in women’s health began after training at Brown University, Jefferson Medical College, and the University of Michigan. For over 30 years, I advocated patient-centered care, supporting families through pregnancy, new birthing practices, attachment, loss, and ethical decision-making. I helped several thousand babies take their first breath, and also did my share of pelvic surgery.
In 2001, I shifted my focus to chronic pelvic pain, founding one of the first office-based, non-surgical practices specializing exclusively in pelvic, genital, and sexual pain disorders. My work combines neuroscience with time spent learning and caring for the “whole patient,” structured in a biopsychosocial approach, helping over 2,300 patients from 40 states and 20 countries.
As a Board-Certified GYN, I had to learn about pain science. Success followed by “connecting the dots” between sensory awareness in the pelvic region and incorporating pain reprocessing and trauma-based therapies.
This integration of pain science into the direct medical model of care provided a “new,” more effective pathway for precision diagnosis and management of these complex disorders. I learned and implemented them into my practice. I needed to include the neuromuscular, urogenital, structural, and functional mechanisms underlying all the pain generators in the busiest part of the body.
I remain passionate about raising awareness, advancing early diagnosis, and collaborating to create multidisciplinary Centers of Excellence. Through my work, writings, and website, I have aimed to “pass forward” decades of clinical experience to improve care for millions suffering from these invisible conditions.
Let’s connect and work together to make pelvic and genital pain visible and understood!
